Digital identity document: identity document that is issued in a machine-processable form, that is digitally signed by the issuer, and that is in purely digital form.

Machine-processable, in this case, does not include optical scanning and processing of a physical identity document.

A digital identity document can be contained in a physical identity document, e.g. an eMRTD contained in a passport or national identity card.

The eMRTD part of a passport or national identity card is sometimes called "electronic identity" or even "eID". In the present document, this part of a passport or national identity card is a digital identity document.
